Where can I try a latex mattress before I buy?

Natural latex starts as the seed of the rubber tree, Hevea brasiliensis. After about six to seven years the tree is tapped for its milky sap, which is filtered, concentrated, foamed, poured into molds and baked into latex foam, then washed, dried and tested.

What is the difference between natural and organic latex?

Both come from rubber tree sap. Organic latex is grown and processed under GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard) certification, and LATEXPEDIC organic mattresses are covered in GOTS certified organic cotton and wool.

Chapter One

How Latex Is Made: It Starts With a Rubber Seed

Every LATEXPEDIC mattress begins on a tropical plantation, with a seed from the rubber tree, Hevea brasiliensis. Here's how that seed becomes the milky sap we turn into latex.

The Seed

Rubber tree seeds are collected from mature trees and sprouted in nurseries. The strongest seedlings are often grafted with high-yielding stock so each tree gives more sap.

The Young Tree

The saplings are planted out in rows and cared for over about six to seven years. Only then is the trunk big enough to be tapped for latex.

Tapping

At dawn, tappers shave a thin, slanted groove into the bark. White latex sap slowly drips down the groove into a small cup. The tree is not cut down and heals between tappings.

Collecting the Sap

The cups are gathered by hand the same morning. The sap is strained to remove bark and leaves, and kept liquid so it doesn't set before it reaches the factory.

Concentrating

The sap is spun in a centrifuge to remove extra water. What's left is a thick, creamy latex concentrate, the raw material for latex foam.

A Renewable Resource

A rubber tree can be tapped for decades, and it keeps growing and drawing in carbon the whole time. That's why natural latex is one of the most renewable materials you can sleep on.

Chapter Two

From Liquid Sap to Latex Foam: Natural and Organic

Liquid latex becomes a springy, breathable foam through whipping, molding and baking. LATEXPEDIC makes two kinds: Natural latex and Certified Organic latex.

Natural Latex Foam

Pure Talalay latex: light, buoyant and even

Whip. The latex concentrate is whipped with air into a smooth, liquid foam.
Mold & vacuum. It's poured into a mold that is only partly filled. A vacuum then pulls the foam out to fill the mold evenly.
Flash freeze. The mold is frozen to lock millions of open cells in place, so air can flow through every inch.
Gel. Carbon dioxide sets the frozen foam into a solid shape.
Bake. The foam is heated (vulcanized), which gives latex its lasting spring.
Wash, dry & test. Each core is washed, dried and tested for firmness before it becomes a mattress.

The result is the open-cell, breathable Talalay latex that LATEXPEDIC is known for. It contours to your body and springs right back.

Organic plantation. The sap comes from certified organic rubber groves, with no synthetic pesticides or fertilizers.
Certified at every step. The latex is processed under the Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS) from the tree to the finished core.
Foamed & baked. The organic latex is whipped, molded and baked into foam, the same way natural latex is.
Labeled. Each piece of organic latex carries its GOLS label.
Organic cover. The finished layers are quilted in GOTS certified organic cotton and wool. The wool serves as a natural fire barrier.
Hand finished. Each mattress is assembled one at a time, with a zipper and handles.

You get the same buoyant latex support, made with certified organic materials from the tree to the cover.

Organic Latex Mattresses

Talalay Latex

The vacuum-and-freeze method gives an even, airy cell structure from top to bottom. It feels light and lively, and it sleeps cool. This is the heart of every LATEXPEDIC mattress.

Dunlop Latex

The older method: whipped latex is poured into a mold and baked. It's denser and feels firmer, because the heavier latex settles toward the bottom of the mold. Lie on both in our showroom and feel the difference.
